Mashup or plagiarism?
I’m starting to wonder about why I like Girl Talk’s mixing of existing music samples from other musicians but completely dislike the reusing of imagery and artwork from other games and movies in the game Limbo of the Lost. Aren’t the two similar in a way?
What makes one good and one bad when reusing other people’s art? What makes one plagiarism and the other a mashup? It seems like there’s a double standard.
I can’t seem to be able to reconcile my thoughts about this. The only difference I can see, besides the medium, is that one made some great new music, while the other made a crappy new game.
Update: As Andy Baio pointed out to me, attribution and acknowledgment are what make a mashup. Thanks for letting me know!
